A new web-based ultrasound simulator to significantly improve students psychomotor skills requisite to produce US images

In a recent study conducted at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), Switzerland, by Prof. Jean-Yves Meuwlye, a leading scientist in diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology, Innoging’s new web-based ultrasound simulator found to increase substantial skills in the visuospatial and visuomotor fields for medical students. That experience, of self-learning ultrasound with an online, accessible simulation platform, that doesn’t require any installation has the potential to drastically reduce the barriers to use ultrasound simulation and potentially the costs of its use.

Methods

As part of the preparations for the online course, 30 new scans were acquired by the university and used to create 56 exercises to match the course theoretical curriculum.

After students learned the theoretical part, they were asked to answer two questionnaires targeting the manipulations of an ultrasound probe — one before practicing with the simulator and one after practicing with the simulator.

Results

One hundred and ninety three students have achieved the pre-course during the allotted period. One hundred and eighty four students performed all the simulator exercises and 181 performed the post course test. The faculty sent 190 evaluation questionnaires of which, 136 were returned (76%).

Analysis of the targeted questionnaires determined that the scores had increased significantly after the completion of the simulator exercises — from average score of 4.23 to average score of 6.36 (scores were from 0 to 10).

It was also found that the post-course score for all students was related to the scores given by the simulator. On the simulator, the lowest score was 43.68, the highest 99.67, with a mean of 76.11 (simulator scores were from 0 to 100).
